Brothers Tim and Neil Finn have been fashioning music together since their childhood in Te Awamutu, New Zealand, continuing through to external success in Split Enz and Crowded House. However, it wasn't until belated 1989 that they actually started composition together -- a reunion that yielded more than a twelve songs for a proposed Finn Brothers side contrive. That record album was scrapped and most of the material was absorbed by Crowded House's Woodface (1991) and Unitedly Alone (1993), as well as Tim's 1993 solo album, Ahead & After. The brothers' fancy resumed in late 1994, and in four weeks, they completed an record album called simply Finn. The record album, released in the fall of 1995 (the summertime of 1996 in the U.S.), showed a practically more casual side of the Finns and was less pop-oriented than their previous melodious collaborations -- the brothers encounter about all of the instruments themselves, ranging from the crude to the exotic. After initial pressings of Finn, the duet changed their appoint to the Finn Brothers to empty confusion with a banding loss under a interchangeable appoint. In 2004 the Finn Brothers returned with Everyone Is Here.

No doubtfulness the first of his kind, Bubba Sparxxx thunderstruck the rap music community -- and soon after, the mass grocery store -- when he emerged extinct of nowhere with Timbaland in late 2001. When his debut single, "Atrocious," strike urban radio, it was unmistakably a Timbaland production -- the "Stimulate Ur Freak On" samples organism a sort of trademark stamp. This drew initial aid to Sparxxx, world Health Organization many initially thinking of as yet some other Dirty South rapper, albeit 1 lucky enough to be the flagship for Timbaland's inauguration Beat Club label. But when the video recording for "Ugly" strike MTV and Sparxxx's face later began coming into court in the press, the dumbfoundment really set in: Sparxxx was not but from the South simply was selfsame large -- and white. In other words, he seemed the antithesis of what a knocker was say to be, and similar to the overnight achiever former white rappers experient -- Beastie Boys, Vanilla Ice, Eminem -- Sparxxx was short more than just an anomaly; he was a bona fide wizard.

Patch Sparxxx's rhymes initially john Drew aid to the knocker -- and truly so -- you can't help merely marvel at his news report. Yes, he was white and big. But he was too from the back country of the South -- roughly as far from the streets as you could get. Born Warren Anderson Mathis on March 6, 1977, Sparxxx grew up in the commonwealth on a scandal road 15 proceedings north of LaGrange, GA, a rural ithiel Town itself 65 miles southwest of Georgia. As you can buoy imagine, he lived a sheltered youth, with his nighest neighbor over a half mile off. Yet it was that neighbour, a black kid, wHO turned him onto rap via mix mail-clad tapes from New York.

Sparxxx's launching to rap music was through 2 Live Crew -- a far stretch along from Rakim or Grandmaster Flash. It caught his attention, though, and presently Sparxxx began broadening his taste for rap music music, taking a particular liking for early-'90s West Coast gangsta rap: N.W.A., Too Short, and Eazy-E. Later, when he ascertained Altanta rappers OutKast, Sparxxx knew his interests were moving into the vanguard of his brain. He began penning rhymes at long time 15 and would struggle with dude rap-minded students at school. His rapping was more of a hobby than a possible profession for Sparxxx at the fourth dimension, though. Throughout high school, football took anteriority over everything else for the young Sparxxx; he played close death and line backer, earning All-Region honors as a senior.

When a football life history never happened for Sparxxx and a brief shot at college didn't hold his interest, he off to tap. His break came when he met Shannon Houchins, a staff producer for Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label in Atlanta. In late 1996, Houchins mated Sparxxx with then-So So Def doorknocker Lil' Devil for a group called One Card Shi. Though the duette did disc some material together, it never sawing machine the light of day and Sparxxx began pursuing a solo life history, working with Houchins again in 1999 on some songs. These recordings resulted in the 12-song Dark Days, Bright Nights indie going on Sparxxx's have Nocents Records. After moving a surprising number of units after getting radio play in the surrounding Georgia field, Nocents became eleventh Hour Entertainment, and the album fell into the lap of Interscope Records head honcho Jimmy Iovine.

Iovine liked what he heard and flew Sparxxx out to California to discuss a label trade. Offers soon came in from a number of labels, and dead Sparxxx's breakthrough seemed just on the purview. He distinct to stick with Iovine's Interscope empire and presently plant himself working with Timbaland. Over the course of deuce weeks, the two recorded half a dozen songs and Sparxxx as well worked with other producers like Organized Noize and Houchins. "Ugly" became the pb single; an crucial video communication Sparxxx's rural, white, country-boy scope hit MTV; the evidence of his breakthrough came when the Interscope reading of Dark Days, Bright Nights debuted at number three on the Billboard chart, qualification him the next in a short name of overnight-superstar patrick White rappers. The follow-up, 2003's Rescue, was an introverted album that set up favor with critics simply failed to sway the public. OutKast phallus Big Boi was a big fan of the album and felt it should stimulate been a score, and that it was exactly handled improperly by the label. He came to the rescue by sign language Sparxxx to his new Purple Ribbon imprint and cathartic the rapper's third album, The Charm, in 2006.

Jay-Z Slams 'ignorant' Gallagher

Rapper JAY-Z has hit out at critic NOEL GALLAGHER, branding him "ignorant" for predicting his show at the U.K.'s Glastonbury festival would be unsuccessful.
The Oasis rocker criticised the hip-hop star when it was announced he would be appearing at the annual music event, saying, "I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong. Jay-Z's got no chance."
But Jay-Z silenced his naysayers by wowing tens of thousands of fans with a hit headlining set on Saturday (28Jun08).
And speaking before the gig, the rapper seemed confident he would win over festival-goers, insisting Gallagher shouldn't have made the remarks without watching him perform live.
He said, "You know that sometimes remarks are made out of ignorance.
"If Noel Gallagher had seen me perform and said that then I'd understand it. That is a personal opinion and I have no bearing on how he feels. You know - it's just not your taste.
"But he has never seen me perform. I'm sure, or else he wouldn't say that. We will see what happens."

Movie stars and other celebrities hit the red carpet for Obama

LOS ANGELES - The campaign trail is taking a detour down the red carpet.

Movie stars Samuel Jackson and John Malkovich, big-name directors and other celebrities turned out Tuesday night to contribute to Barack Obama, who is counting on Hollywood's reliable support for Democrats, and the Democratic National Committee.

The guest list for the gala, in which top tickets cost more than $30,000, includes actor Jennifer Beals, models Heidi Klum and Cindy Crawford and boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard. Also expected to attend is Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am, who created two music videos for Obama during the primary season - including one called "Yes We Can" that set music to clips from his speeches and became an Internet sensation.

Obama's campaign and the Democratic National Committee will share the money from the fundraiser. Klum's husband, singer Seal, is among the entertainers expected to perform at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

"We hope we do well," Obama told reporters just before he landed in Los Angeles. "Obviously, we've got a lot of work to do."

Shattering records, Obama had raised more than $287 million through the end of May. Last week, he reversed and earlier promise and said he would not take public financing for the general election. The move lifts the cap on what he can spend, allowing him to pour hundreds of millions more into his campaign against Republican John McCain, who has said he would take public financing and has criticized Obama's decision.

Tuesday's asking ticket price for the gala's general reception was $2,300. Tickets to a VIP dinner were $28,500. Obama aides were expecting at least 500 people, though more were likely. The DNC would get the $28,500 donations and Obama would get the $2,300 share.

McCain and the Republican National Committee raised a combined $7 million at a similar joint fundraiser in New York last month that was hosted by New York Jets owner Woody Johnson.

The list of famous donors who already have given to Obama includes George Clooney, Paul Newman, Matt Damon, Larry David, Will Smith, Jennifer Aniston and Oprah Winfrey.

The Center for Responsive Politics, analyzing fundraising data released May 21, said Obama had collected more than $4 million from the movie, TV and music businesses. His opponent in the Democratic primaries, Senator Hillary Clinton, raised $3.4 million from those groups, and McCain managed $636,000.

McCain's boldface backers include producer Jerry Bruckheimer and "Saturday Night Live" executive producer Lorne Michaels.

The entertainment industry gave $33.1 million to federal candidates in 2004, about 70 per cent of it going to Democrats, the center said.

Along with the big names he hopes to attract in Hollywood, Obama wants to win over the Los Angeles donors who supported Clinton in the primaries.

"I suspect that we'll see some longtime folks that have helped us, I'm sure there will be some Hillary people that are coming over," Obama said Tuesday.

Continuing that push, he will meet Thursday in Washington with Clinton and her former financial backers in an attempt to ease them onto his side.

Gospel Legend Tucker Dies

Gospel legend IRA TUCKER SR. died from severe heart problems in Philadelphia on Tuesday (24Jun08). He was 83.

The Grammy winning lead singer of gospel group the Dixie Hummingbirds died at home after a long battle with heart problems, according to the musician's son, Ira Tucker Jr.

The singer started the band in 1928, and acted as early inspiration for a string of artists, including James Brown, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Al Green.

The Dixie Hummingbirds enjoyed hits with Loves Me Like A Rock, and the group's Still Keeping It Real LP was nominated for a Grammy for best traditional gospel album at last year's ceremony (07).

His son remembers him fondly: "He was an extraordinary performer. I recognised that from the time I was little. Having his name didn't help me, because I couldn't sing."

La Casa del Mojito has mo' to offer than just drinks

With a name like La Casa del Mojito, you might expect the food at this small Roosevelt neighborhood cafe to be mere ballast for the booze. There are stacks of drink glasses — ice already loaded, mint already mulled — next to the door, a pyramid of limes in the kitchen and a pair of bongo drums on the way out to the patio that invite well-lubricated diners to pound away.

But there's also an intriguing menu of Venezuelan and Cuban dishes, making it clear La Casa del Mojito is more than a cocktail factory. This is a neighborhood joint looking to fill bellies as it has fun.

The menu: A selection of meat and fish — slow-cooked or seared — offers a quick trip through Latin cuisine at the Roosevelt cafe and its newly opened sister restaurant in the University District. The appetizer of fried sweet plantains ($3.95) had a dollop of tangy garlic sauce. We tried the Pescado de Tito ($13.95), tilapia rubbed with lots of cinnamon and paprika. The white fish rested on a delicious bed of sweet onions cooked in wine and garlic. The house specialty, Parrilla de Luigi ($15.95), a marinated flank steak, was tender but lacked the zest of the fish. It came with a tasty yuca frita. The Pabellon ($12.95) — a traditional Venezuelan dish with shredded beef, red peppers and onions — gets raves from loyal diners.

What to write home about: The owners of this seven-year-old cafe use authentic ingredients, which are refreshingly stripped of any pan-culture fusion or pretension. The mojito sauce — a garlic aoli — was yummy.

The setting: The canary-yellow cafe, tucked off Lake City Way at the junction to I-5, began filling after 8 p.m. for drinks-on-the-patio diners. And it's kid-friendly, judging from the bangers on the bongo drums. There's salsa and merengue dancing at the U District location on Friday evenings.

Summing up: The plantain appetizer, two good-sized entrees and a flan for dessert came to $41.39. The namesake mojitos ($7) are strong. Any neighborhood should be so lucky.

Kate Nash and The Cribs go karaoke

Kate Nash and The Cribs played DJ slots at the Isle Of Wight Festival yesterday (June 14), with The Cribs' set turning into an impromptu karaoke session.

The London singer and the Wakefield band were playing a DJ slot each at the Ray Ban tent at the festival after both performing on the main stage earlier in the day.

The Cribs played their DJ set at 5pm (BST), with Gary Jarman and brother Ross Jarman spinning tunes including The Replacements' 'Bastards Of Young', which they sometimes cover at their gigs.

The brothers also played 'A Girl Like You' by their friend Edwyn Collins, who produced the band's second album, 'The New Fellas'. They also played 'First Of The gang To Die' by Morrissey.

The Cribs' DJ set turned into a karaoke session at the end, though, when singer/guitarist Ryan Jarman turned up and sang 'Never Gonna Give You Up' by Rick Astley much to the delight of nearby fans.

Kate Nash played a DJ set next at the Ray Ban venue, playing tracks from a Damaged Goods record label compilation she had brought to the festival with her.
